How your name is written in Latin letters

In Greece, ID cards and passports write names in Latin letters following ELOT 743. The standard carries over the letters, not the pronunciation. The rules that catch most people out:

Vowel pairs are written letter by letter. αι ai, ει ei, οι oi, ου ou: Αικατερίνη Aikaterini, Ουρανία Ourania.

η and ι become i, υ becomes y. Δημήτρης Dimitris, Ευτυχία Eftychia.

αυ and ευ become av, ev or af, ef, depending on the letter that follows. Παύλος Pavlos, Ευάγγελος Evangelos, Ευθυμίου Efthymiou.

μπ at the start becomes b, in the middle mp. Μπάμπης Bampis, Χαράλαμπος Charalampos.

Why is Γιώργος written Giorgos and not Yorgos?

Because the standard carries over the letters, not the sound. γ always becomes g and ι becomes i, even where it sounds like y.
