WooCommerce, Shopify
or your own shop

What each one wins and loses. We build all three, so we have no reason to push you anywhere.

There is no right answer for everyone. There is a right answer for your size, your turnover and your plans. Below we put them side by side, along with the points nobody usually mentions.

Shopify

When we recommend it. You want to open quickly, you have few products, you do not want to touch anything technical and you are testing whether the idea sells. It is the least demanding option and it works.

What you should know. You pay a subscription forever, and almost every missing feature arrives as a paid add on with its own monthly fee. Three or four add ons and the running cost doubles. The shop is also not yours: if you leave you take your products and customers, but not the site.

WooCommerce

When we recommend it. You already run WordPress, you want control of your data without a monthly subscription, and the shop is normal rather than unusual. It is the most common and the most flexible middle option.

What you should know. The freedom comes with responsibility. It needs updates, backups and attention to security. The biggest problem in practice is add ons: each one adds code, and a shop with twenty of them becomes slow and fragile.

Your own shop in Laravel

When we recommend it. When your business does something the ready made platforms do not do well. Different prices per customer, a link to your accounting or stock system, orders with your own rules, many products with complex variants, or simply turnover large enough that the subscription has become a weight.

No subscription. The cost is up front. After that you pay only hosting and maintenance, so over three to five years it usually works out cheaper.
It is fast because it carries nothing spare. There are no twenty add ons running on every page load. We write only what you need.
Nothing limits you. Whatever you ask for can be done, because the code is yours. You are not waiting for a platform to support it.
The data and the code belong to you. You can take them and leave, even leave us. There is no lock in.
Security without the update queue. You do not depend on dozens of third party add ons, which is the most common way a shop gets hacked.
And the downsides, because there are some. It costs more at the start and takes longer to open. There are no ready made themes or thousands of one click add ons. And you depend on somebody who knows the code, so pick a partner who will still be there in two years. If you sell 30 products and have no unusual needs, custom is overkill and we will tell you so.

How the cost compares over five years

PlatformStartPer yearOver 5 years
Shopify€1.500€1.400€8.500
WooCommerce€3.200€600€6.200
Custom (Laravel)€6.000€450€8.250

Indicative numbers for a mid sized shop. Notice that over five years Shopify and custom end up close, but with custom you own something that does not stop when you stop paying, while WooCommerce is the cheapest overall when it suits you.

How to choose, in three questions

Am I testing or do I know it sells? Testing, Shopify. Knowing, the other two.
Is the shop ordinary or does it have its own rules? Ordinary, WooCommerce. Its own rules, custom.
How much does paying every month forever bother you? If it bothers you, stay away from subscriptions.

Common questions

Can I move from one to another later?
Products and customers move almost always. What is lost is the design, the settings and anything built with add ons. Treat a migration as a small project, not a button.
Is custom more secure?
Not automatically. It is more secure because it carries far less third party code, which is the usual way in. But written carelessly it is just as vulnerable. Security is about who builds it, not about the technology.
Why Laravel and not something else?
It is mature, it has a large community, and you can find another developer easily if you need one. That last point matters: an exotic choice ties you to one person.
What do you use yourselves?
All three, depending on the case. Our own website is in Laravel. Plenty of our clients are on WordPress and WooCommerce and that is the right choice for them.
